Napa Valley Grapegrowers – 50 years of serving the community
For five decades, Napa Valley Grapegrowers (NVG) has been a steadfast voice for grape growers, championing viticulture in Napa County.
As an advocate of the region’s agricultural heritage, NVG has consistently worked to strengthen the bond between grape growers and the community, fostering a deeper appreciation for the vineyards that define the Napa Valley.
“As both a vintner and grape grower, having an organization like the Napa Valley Grapegrowers, that advocates for local farming, is so important. This organization helps to communicate that the agricultural community is what makes the Napa Valley so special. Without the Napa Valley community’s commitment to conservation, our landscape wouldn’t be vineyards and wilderness, it would be mostly residential and business,” commented John Anthony Truchard, Founder and CEO of John Anthony Wine & Spirits.
John was recently featured on NVG’s podcast, “Grown in Napa Valley,” for an interview that dove into John Anthony Vineyards’ long-tenured membership of the NVG, the success story of Butter Wines, and John and Michele Truchard’s philanthropic efforts that have played an impactful role in the lives of so many.
Over the years, NVG has launched innovative initiatives designed to engage the public, raise awareness about sustainable vineyard practices, and emphasize the importance of preserving viticulture in the Napa Valley.
One such initiative is the “Ask a Grower” booth, which has become a staple at the Napa Farmers Market. These monthly, interactive exhibits provide an invaluable opportunity for the public to connect directly with growers and learn about topics ranging from the ecological benefits of bluebird boxes to the role of cover crops in sustainable farming, and more.
By answering questions and sharing their expertise, NVG aims to develop a deeper understanding of vineyard stewardship and its broader environmental impacts.
For over two decades, NVG has connected the Napa County community with viticulture through Afternoon in the Vineyards, an event hosted in partnership with the Napa Valley Vintners.
The annual event invites community members into the vineyard to learn what makes the Napa Valley such a unique winegrowing region and leader in sustainable agriculture.
The 2025 event will be held on April 12, 1pm – 3pm and will feature family-owned vineyard operations employing innovative farming practices focused on stewarding the land.
In 2024, NVG launched Friends of the Grapegrowers (FOG), a community-focused initiative for those curious about viticulture. FOG enrollees gain exclusive access to educational workshops, behind-the-scenes vineyard tours, and events that lift the fog on the intricate and complex processes of grape growing in Napa’s vineyards.
FOG participants receive a quarterly newsletter packed with updates on NVG initiatives, trends in cutting edge viticulture, and fascinating vineyard facts. Additionally, it provides an avenue for community members to support the 501(c)(3) classified Napa Valley Grapegrowers, ensuring the long-term health of Napa Valley’s vineyards and environment for the benefit of all.
In response to the pressing challenges of climate change, NVG has made its Climate Science Seminar accessible to a broader audience through a series of six online videos.
These seminars equip growers and the public with critical tools to build climate resiliency, furthering NVG’s mission to safeguard Napa Valley’s vineyards for future generations.
The NVG YouTube channel consists of numerous educational and informative offerings targeted at enhancing the knowledge base of viticulturists, wine enthusiasts, and the general public.
“Over the past 50 years, our organization has adapted to tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing Napa’s grape-growing community. Our efforts have focused on protecting and enhancing this remarkable land, ensuring its beauty, vitality, and resiliency for generations to come,” said Caleb Mosley, executive director of the Napa Valley Grapegrowers.
“We invite community members to join us at our educational events to explore the incredible work happening in the vineyards to safeguard our agricultural heritage. The Napa Valley is an extraordinary place to live and work, and through collaboration and education, we strive to preserve it for decades ahead.“
By combining education, community engagement, and sustainable practices, the Napa Valley Grapegrowers continues to solidify its role as a vital advocate for the region, ensuring that its legacy thrives in perpetuity.
